Spain is a country that has become known in recent years as an international centre for design innovation and excellence." These are the words of New York's MoMA, the world's most prestigious museum of contemporary art, on the subject of the new architecture being developed in Spain. Sir Norman Foster, Frank O. Gehry, César Pelli, Santiago Calatrava, Rafael Moneo… Designs by these architects are often found amongst the buildings and infrastructure developed recently in Spain. Now, alongside cathedrals and palaces dating back centuries, you will also find stunning airports, museums and modern towers that are real works of art on account of their particular beauty and originality. These are unique urban sites that are a joy to discover.

Aesthetic, functional and of high quality
The famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is one of the city's prime attractions. It was designed by the American architect Gehry, who is currently immersed in the project for the Marqués de Riscal Winery in Elciego, Álava. In Bilbao you can also use the underground system, whose metro station entrances were designed by Sir Norman Foster. This architect also designed the Conference Centre in Valencia and will present the project for one of the four towers to form part of the future prolongation of Paseo de la Castellana Avenue in Madrid. Another fascinating tower is the Agbar in Barcelona, with its unmissable, brightly-coloured façade.

Santiago Calatrava, one of Spain's most internationally famous architects, is also responsible for some buildings in Bilbao, such as the airport and the Pasarela Zubi-Zuri footbridge. The Arts and Sciences Centre in Valencia and the Auditorium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands) are other buildings designed by him that you can see in Spain.

Places for art
Rafael Moneo is another highly prestigious Spanish architect. He has been awarded the Pritzker prize (architecture's equivalent to the Nobel prize) and was in charge of designing the Conference Centre in Donostia-San Sebastián: the Kursaal Centre. He also designed the Julián Chivite Wineries building in Estella (Navarre), and the extension project for the Prado Museum in Madrid.

In Madrid there are two constructions that are outstanding for their combination of avant-garde design, beauty and functionality. One is the new T4 terminal at Barajas airport. The other is the new extension to the Reina Sofía National Art Museum. These are just a few examples of avant-garde architecture in Spain, but there are many more. The world's top architects are currently involved in Spanish buildings, with a range of projects that go from council housing to conference centres - soon to be completed.
