Tracing the beginning of Western civilization: As we follow in the footsteps of Socrates, we will be reconstructing the most glorious and creative period of Athens, a period which laid the foundations of Western thought, democracy and philosophy. We will be visiting the Ancient Agora, Areos Pagos, Filopappos Hill, Pnyka Hill, the Attalos Arcade and the Temple of Hephaestus are just a few of the highlights on this walking tour. History is everywhere and, as we walk along the enduring paths, we will have the chance to see how the ancients really lived, where the great philosophers delivered their monumental speeches and how these remnants provide a tangible link to our world today. Detailed Itinerary08.45am meeting at the Airotel Parthenon Hotel to enjoy a 40-mins presentation to become acquainted with the great classical era of Athens. The lecture will cover some of the greatest characters on the stage of world history, such as Socrates, Pericles, Themistocles, Aristides and Kimon. Our aim is to further comprehend why Athens has been named the “cradle of democracy and civilization” and how this remarkable period in human history saw so many advances in architecture, politics and philosophy. 09h30 we head towards the southeast side of Acropolis. We walk past the very ancient Theater of Dionysus and the Herod of Atticus Odeon. As we approach the foot of Filopappos Hill, we will talk about Socrates, as this is the spot he is believed to have been imprisoned. The nearby Hill of Pnyka is where glorious politicians, like Pericles & Themistocles, gave speeches and the very place where thousands of Athenians made decisions about their city. We then walk to the steep rock of Areos Pagus, the ancient Supreme Court. We then walk downhill to the Ancient Agora; the center of public and political life in ancient Athens, where we will see the remnants of the Parliament of 500, the Prytaneum and the House of Simon the Shoemaker. The Temple of Hephaestus will appear before us; whose the construction began before that of the Parthenon.
