Local Amenities and ActivitiesAlmiridaandKalivesare situated in the Apokoronasregion to the east ofChaniawhich is where most of our holiday villas are. Apokoronas is one of the most picturesque areas of the province of Chania with attractive villages dotted all around. The main village of the region is Vamoswhere you will find full facilities including a 24 hour health centre. In the last few years visitors from Northern Europe have become so enchanted with Apokoronas that many have bought homes here which has brought new life and tourist facilities to the area. This also means that there are now sophisticated and luxury villas available to rent in this part of Crete. Most of our properties are situated slightly inland, a little bit removed from the madding crowd, in the most sought after locations but with beaches and the sea close at hand. The large bay that makes up the seaside resorts of Almirida and Kalives has many separate, safe, sandy beaches, usually with full facilities. Almirida, once a fishing village is now a thriving seaside resort. Tavernas and bars line the sea front. There are a couple of mini-markets, a bakery, patisserie, a wine shop and a newsagents. There is a windsurfing school, a scuba diving centre and boat trips are available with Captain Nick. Mountain bikes can be hired and there is also a small taxi rank. The Almirida Beach Hotel is open to non residents and has internet facilities as well as a 10 pin bowling lane. There is a limited bus service to Kalives and Chania. At the entrance to Almirida archaeologists discovered an ancient Mosaic which belongs to the 5th century. Other archaeological finds have been unearthed about 10 minutes away at Aptera, between Kalives and Chania. Kalivesis a working village as well as being a tourist destination so in addition to the beaches, tavernas, bars and tourist shops you will find many local shops as well as a fairly big supermarket of the INKA chain. Banking, post office, pharmacy and petrol station facilities are available in Kalives. There is a bus service to Chania. Quote from a client - September 2013 -We have greatly enjoyed our stay here. We have been impressed by the good value at all the restaurants in Plaka; Elpis was our favourite but we felt that the quality of the food was evenbetter at the many sea front restaurants in Almyrida. Quote from a client - June 2012Almirida beach has been lovely. Clear, clean, warm sea, suitable for children. Our children snorkled there. We had nice food brought to us on the beach by Atlantis cafe. A beautiful week in a comfortable villa in a beautiful and quiet part of Crete. Quote from a client - August 2011- "Highly recommend the Dream speedboat trip from Almyrida – best day of the holiday vote by all (3 teenagers and 2 older!)". Quote from a client - June 2011- "Like everyone else we have used the local shops and thought the food at the tavernas in Plaka was very good. We also ate at Lagos in Almirida where the food was fantastic, all beautiful and freshly cooked. We can also recommend Almirida beach which is very family friendly with warm sea and gently sloping sands which are safe for children". Quote from a client - June 2011- "This is our first visit to Crete and we enjoyed every minute of it, it is such a beautiful island and Plaka is wonderful, very peaceful and relaxing with a good selection of tavernas in the square and a little supermarket for provisions - the man who owns it is very helpful!! Almyrida is lovely too with a bigger selection of tavernas, a great bakeryand a lovely beach". Quote from a client - September 2010 -"We loved Chania and recommend it. The drive south to Chora Sfakion is spectacular. Another great drive is to Georgioupolis via Kokkino Chorio with village after village unchanged by time. Sunday lunch in one of the tavernas in Gavalochori surrounded by Greek families enjoying each other's company was great fun." Quote from a client - August 2010- "Almirida has good beaches and tavernas. Great 2 hour trip with George on the Crete Dream rib around the coast to the Octopus bar and back - snorkelling included. Fabulous holiday. Many thanks." Quote from a client - August 2010 - "Great beaches at Almirida, Kalives and Georgioupolis. Fab food at all the resorts, just follow the locals and you won't go far wrong". Plaka– approx 25 kms east of Chania and just above above Almirida; once a sleepy place of approx 250 inhabitants, Plaka has grown over the last few years as people have discovered its charms and moved into the area. You could come to Plaka for a holiday and never move out of the village because it has everything you need, a petrol station, well stocked mini markets, tavernas and a couple of bars that are popular with locals and tourists alike. The area around Plaka has so much to offer that it would be a shame not to explore the other local villages. There are many marked walks and pathways in the immediate area. Local transport and taxis are available in Almirida. Kokkino Chorio- Means red village. Just a few minutes drive up the hill from Plaka, Kokkino Chorio is famous for its part in the filming of Zorba The Greek; nearly all the village participated. Anthony Quinn is still talked about in the village kafenions!! There's a fine traditional taverna in the village square and a very well stocked shop nearby. There is a glass blowing factory in the village which uses recycled glass. Next door is an organic taverna where you can try some traditional Greek dishes with "a twist". The village boasts some of the most stunning views out to sea and has deservedly become a desirable location both for permanent residence and as a holiday destination. On the outskirts of the village and walkable from many of our villas in Kokkino Chorio is a fabulous new taverna called "The Retreat". The food is great and the vciews are simply stunning. Aspro -Means white village. It is a quaint place with some new villas. There are no amenities such as a grocery shop or taverna in Aspro but it's only a couple of minutes drive to Almirida where there is a choice. There are howevermany walking paths to choose from. Gavalochori- The historical village of Gavalochori is situated just a few kms inland from Almirida, on the road to Vamos and was named after the Byzantine family Gavalodon who lived there about 1200AD. The village has many old buildings which are being lovingly restored and make this village much sought after. In the centre of the village is a shop exhibiting traditional arts and crafts of the local women. There is also a folklore museum. Kafenion and tavernas edge the village square inviting you to sit and to pass the time away. Monica's taverna, just behind the war memorial, has a tiny indoor eating area with a large garden filled with tables. Theyserve a wide choice of Greek dishes, many of which cannot be found in other places. The White Mountainsdominate the area and provide a dramatic backdrop. Walking in the area around Almirida and Kalives- there is a great deal to interest walkers in this lush area.Extending about 10 kms or so inland it is rich in olive and citrus groves, pasture lands and tiny hamlets rarely visited by tourists. In the spring-time, the fields, groves and tracks abound in an endless variety of flora including many species which are endemic to Crete. Keen birdwatchers will find a large number of local as well as migratory birds to see, ranging from tiny warblers to large buzzards and even the odd kite! Check in / Check out timesBooking InformationChange-over days are Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sundayto fit in with the majority of direct flights from the UK and Scandinavia to both Chania and Heraklionairports -see our flights page. Carry on till you come to a roundabout at the junction with the main road opposite the NATO ba Go through the villages of Aroni and Pithari. Don’t worry about the signs being in Greek; signs in English will follow them. After leaving Pithari you will come to a roundabout with signposts for Rethymnon and Chania. Slow down and take the 2nd exit, you will then see a signpost for Souda, 7 kms. Stay on this road and Souda Bay from now on will always be on your left. Continue all the way down the hill. You will eventually come to the outskirts of Souda, evidenced by increased buildings and a sign for an Inka supermarket which is a good place to stock up on essentials for your stay. The supermarket is on your right just before a set of traffic lights. It’s easy to park your car behind the supermarket. At the traffic lights by the Inka, turn right and then first left at a busy and difficult junction, following the signs for Rethymnon. You are now on a two lane road which you will exit left in order to join the main North Coast highway – all the time signed for Rethymnon. Once on the North Coast highway you are going straight on for approx 14 kms. Take care to keep to the speed limit as there can be police with radar guns as well as fixed speed cameras along this stretch of road. You will pass an exit on the right for Aptera and Stylos and an exit on the left for Kalami and Kalives. You will then pass a sign for Interchange 2000m then signs for Kalives Armeni Vamos at 1000m & 500m before coming to this junction where you need to exit. After a few yards you come to another junction, turn left, this takes you back under the main highway. Continue along this road entering the village of Kalives. At the “T” junction, turn right – signed to Vamos. If you turn left here you’ll find an Inka supermarket (you’ll come to it eventually) and a bank with cash point facilities. The bank is set back from the road on the right hand side shortly before you come to a bridge that goes over the “river”. There are other cash machines in Kalives but it’s not so easy to park at them. After turning right, follow the road past some shops and up a winding hill where you’ll need a low gear at times. On one of the bends you will see the Sunrise Apartments; you need to turn left on the next bend where you will see an advert for Myridakis villas. It is signed to Almirida, Plaka and Kokkino Chorio. Follow this road all the way to Almirida and take the first right turn you come to, just after a left hand bend. Drive along this short road to a junction with a telegraph pole in the middle of the road. Opposite you will see two roads, take the one on the left which takes you past shops and offices on both sides of the road and eventually the back of the Almirida Beach Hotel, carry straight on all the way up this road passing through the centre of the village of Plaka where there are a few tavernas and bars. Just after you leave the centre of the village behind you, turn right opposite the mini market, signposted Kambia. Continue on this road; go past the EKO garage on the right, to a T junction. Turn left at the junction, signposted Kokkino Chorio and continue until you come to the next junction which is almost opposite the glass factory at Kokkino Chorio. Turn left, this road brings you to Kokkino Chorio’s village square with the church in front of you (but slightly to the right of the village square) and the village taverna on the left. Turn left immediately after the taverna and drive across the square in order to reach the lane which leads off the right hand side of the square. NB - this lane runs almost parallel to the road you have just left behind you. Drive down this lane, there are villas on both the left and the right, where the road forks, take the right fork. The tarmac will peter out and you will soon be on a rough track going downhill. Please drive carefully. Almost when you think the track is coming to an end, you will arrive at two white villas with blue shutters. The Villa Artemis is the first of these two villas. You will find the key under a plant pot on the porch (swimming pool side). Should you experience any problems in finding the key or if you have any problems with your accommodation after arrival please contact the property managers,Peter and Anne Brooks on mobile: 0030 697 698 4998 HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY Policies & Disclaimers
