GENERAL INFORMATION
Chalkida is the capital city of Evia province with approx. 90.000 inhabitants.
It is one of the most charming cities of Greece and in combination with the fact that is only 50 min. from Athens, by car, makes it an even more charming destination.
It is built by the two sides of Euripus Channel, with one part of the city being in Evia island and the other part of the city in the mainland of Central Greece. On the hill of Korinthos exists the Venetian Castle of Karababa. The castle together with the bridge of Euripus Channel are worth to visit.
There is a unique phenomenon in the Channel of Euripus, where the sea waters change direction every 6 hours, with 1 hour pose between them.
HISTORY
The name of the city “Chalkida” comes from the Greek word Chalkos (cooper) that existed in that area and which contributed to the growth of the city during the ancient times.
Chalkida with the 2 ports by Euripus Channel, was one of the most wealthy cities of ancient Greece and had colonies in Thrace and Sicily. Because of its wealth, the Athenians, the Macedonians, the Peloponnese etc. tried to conquer it.
From 1205 to 1470 Chalkida and the whole island of Evia were ruled by the Venetians, who constructed remarkable walls.
From 1470 the city was ruled for 3 centuries by the Turks and from 1833 it became of Greek occupation.
